Homage to Mondrian

2003 – 24×36 in. – acrylic on canvas

This tree next to the Post Office has no leaves but the branches are filled with the color of the purple building behind it. The title, “Homage to Mondrian,” refers to Piet Mondrian’s early tree paintings that became more and more abstracted. The painting came together with details that allowed further play  with that linearity, such as the painted pavement lines and the railings. Compare this to the later painting of the same scene, “Homage to Bonnard”
