1983 – 20×38 in. – oil on canvas – Private Collection
When my daughter Kelsey started playing in the leaves inside the fence that was draped with the pool cover, I was struck by the clash of artificial and natural forms – and the perseverance of the natural (the leaves and shadow making it over the fence). The artificial was just as interesting to look at and paint – reminding me of the Cristo running fence. At this time I was doing a lot of paintings with fences that were barriers to physical passage but not to visual interaction.
